A sustainable product

Holonite products are sustainable. On this page we explain more about our Cradle to Cradle certification and the option to have Holonite products produced BioBased.

Cradle to Cradle Certification

Cradle to Cradle Certicication® is a worldwide leading standard used by developers, brands and manufacturers to design healthy, fair and sustainable products. The Cradle to Cradle certification indicates to what extent a product meets each of the five separate criteria, which are distinguished by the Cradle to Cradle principle.

The five pillars on which products are assessed are the following:

• Material choise
• Energy use in the production process
• Social policy
• Reuse in technical or biological cycles
• Water use in the production process.

Based on the total score on these five pillars, the product receives a Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum Cradle to Cradle certification. The Cradle to Cradle Product Innovation Institute determines the minimum standards per category. The manufacturer of the products/services has its products objectively assessed. This is done on the basis of the Cradle to Cradle criteria. Each category is rated with one of the scores (Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum).

Silver certificate

In the past year, Holonite has been extensively researched again at product and process level in the context of maintaining its Cradle to Cradle certification (Bronze and Silver). The ultimate goal of this research is to realize the reuse of Holonite products. This means that we convert Holonite products that are at the end of their lifespan into new Holonite products. We have formulated the following sustainability ambitions for the coming years:

• Full use of renewable raw materials
• Furhter material savings
• Implementation of an energy saving plan

Holonite has been researching the sustainability of its products for more than 10 years now. We use the C2C program for this, also known as the most prominent scientifically based method in the world. That has brought us to where we are today.

Holonite products are therefore Cradle to Cradle certified. Holonite products are manufactured in the Bronze certified version as standard. It is also possible to supply Holonite products Silver certified on request, with the exception of Granbianco (colour no. 2) and Grannero (colour no. 4). Prices and delivery times for Silver products are on request.

BioBased production

Optionally, Holonite can also produce BioBased products. An excellent choice for projects that strive for maximum environmental friendliness. Not only for the current generation but also for future generations.

BioBased products are made from renewable raw materials, which contributes to a reduction in dependence on fossil fuels. This promotes a sustainable economy and helps to preserve natural resources. Holonite strives for the exclusive use of clean raw materials that have no negative impact on people and the environment (earth, air and water).

Our product consists of a high-quality composite mixture, in which various quartz granulates are mixed with pigment, additives and a binder (resin). The binder can be (partly) replaced by a natural variant, derived from biomass. Biomass is material of biological origin excluding material from geological deposits and/or fossilized material. Materials that can grow again during the lifespan of a building.

In our case, we use raw materials that partly originate from rapeseed oil and waste products from the food industry. Products such as corn or soy that affect the production of food or otherwise harm nature or its environment are avoided. This means that fewer fossil raw materials are needed and you take effective steps towards sustainable construction. We currently offer you (for an additional charge) the options between two variants, namely:

• The BioBased Plus variant
• The BioBased Premium variant

BioBased Plus variant

The BioBased Plus is the most common variant within our BioBased range. A variant in which part of the binding agent is replaced by a biocomponent (raw material of natural origin). The result is a product that consists of 84% raw materials of natural origin. We are happy to offer you this BioBased Plus variant as a cost-effective alternative to the BioBased Premium variant. Please contact us for information about the additional charge and delivery time of this BioBased Plus variant.

BioBased Premium variant

The BioBased Premium is a specially developed variant in which the binding agent is largely replaced by a natural alternative (biocomponent). This allows us to create a product that consists of 90% raw materials of natural origin. We recommend our BioBased Premium variant for large prestigious and innovative projects (and therefore has a minimum purchase quantity). The adjusted composition can lead to minor colour deviations.  Ask about the possibilities.
