Renovation in The Hague connects residents and neighborhood with unique sparrow panels

Renovation in The Hague connects residents and neighborhood with unique sparrow panels

Recently, the Naaldwijksestraat in The Hague was renovated on behalf of housing corporation Staedion. The reason for renovation was the poor condition of the facade and drafts around the window frames. Initially, the facades were not architecturally outstanding and very dated. In collaboration with architectural firm Vanschagen Architecten and construction company Van Omme & De Groot B.V., several corrections were introduced to the facade layout. Before these plans could be realized, the collaborating parties faced the challenge of providing a solution for the existing solid facade surfaces that doesn’t appear massive and robust. In search of thin, solid panels with a structure, keeping in mind a new impulse for the neighborhood and simultaneously a binding factor between residents and the neighborhood, Holonite was approached. For this renovation, Holonite produced unique custom elements, on which flying sparrows are depicted in an abstract manner. With this design, the architect made a reference to the most important binding element in the Schilderswijk over the past 60 years; the community center ‘de Mussen’ (the Sparrows). This special renovation in The Hague now forms the binding factor between residents and the neighborhood.
