Woudagebouw: “Subtle window frames for a calm and stately appearance!”

The building on Lange Nieuwstraat in Utrecht has undergone a true transformation. The distinctive grey concrete building, which served as a mental health institution a few years ago, is now a beautiful residential building with 58 apartments. The renovation was carried out by VORM based on a design by A3 architecten.

In the design, A3 Architecten managed to create a better connection with the surrounding area through a new facade. This gives the building a homely appearance, which is important for the realization of the building’s current function. The new brick facade has a classic division with a plinth, a middle section, and a top.

Throughout the entire building, you will find window frames by Holonite. Such frames are composed of lintels, reveals, and window sills. A custom project where the client’s wishes were central to the design. In this project, subtle window frames were chosen, executed in the basic color white. The combination of the surfaces, the recessed window sections, and the Holonite window frames give the building a calm and stately appearance. As A3 Architecten beautifully describes it: “The border arrangement above the plinth shows a calm rhythm with its division of windows and surfaces.”
