New Construction Project De Broeckgouw

New Construction Project De Broeckgouw

The municipality of Edam-Volendam is attracting national attention with its new residential area De Broeckgouw. No project developer was involved; the municipality has and maintains complete control over the construction of approximately 1000 homes in the new Volendam neighborhood.

The municipality has no profit motive but wants to offer citizens a sustainable, high-quality neighborhood. It is quite unique for a municipality to act as a developer itself, carrying out and directing many activities. Based on a housing needs survey among residents, the municipality determined which homes would be built, but does not sit at the drawing board itself. A number of architects have been selected who are responsible for the design of the homes.

The project mainly consists of starter homes, but there are also free plots for self-build. Given the scale of the tenders and applications, many areas of expertise have been brought together in the project office, such as land affairs and coordination in this complex whole. A number of external advisors assist the project office. The executive board and the city council are responsible for decision-making. The urban design of Broeckgouw is based on a design by urban planning firm Kuijper Compagnons from Rotterdam.

Holonite has contributed to this project with Premax thresholds, string courses, and window sills. The window sills have been applied both straight and in corner shapes for the bay windows and window sections. The string courses playfully run across the entire row of houses, which fully reinforces the design of one building with multiple homes merged within it.
