Delivering custom work with standard Holonite solutions!

The sustainable Holonite is increasingly proving to be the solution in both large and small-scale construction projects. This is not surprising, as Holonite products are low-maintenance, alkali-resistant, and Cradle to Cradle certified. This makes them the perfect alternative to classic building elements such as concrete. All the benefits without the drawbacks. This was also the idea of architect Jasper van Dijke and project developer Martijn van den Bogaard, the duo behind the design and construction of the latter’s cubist house.

As a project developer at Van Wanrooij Bouw & Ontwikkeling, Martijn van den Bogaard regularly encounters the advantages of Holonite. When he got the chance to develop and build his own house, using Holonite was an obvious choice. ‘A few years ago, I got the opportunity to buy a plot of land and wanted to build a unique house on it. We preferred a house in a cubist style, which I expected the municipality wouldn’t approve. Jasper was willing to have the conversation and convinced the urban planner of the municipality that we would make a statement with this building. And he turned out to agree with us!’ In the preliminary design, brickwork, wooden elements, stucco, and the use of concrete were considered, but the preference for a low-maintenance home led Martijn and Jasper to Holonite.

Customization with standard solutions
‘The Preliminary Design process begins with orientation,’ says Jasper van Dijke of Weusten Liedembaum architects. ‘How do you want to live? What is the family composition? What’s the attitude towards maintenance? Martijn turned out to have a clear vision that formed the basis for the various variants I developed for him. The end product is strikingly sleek. The design, the brickwork, and the connection with the Holonite parts all contribute to this exceptional project. Because we involved Mark Nuijten from Holonite early in the process, we were able to tackle potential issues and even managed to deliver custom work with standard Holonite solutions.’

Brickwork and Holonite at the same height
Mark Nuijten, account manager at Holonite, confirms that involvement in the preliminary stage optimizes the result. ‘This way, we prevent a design from being presented that our product cannot fulfill. The collaboration with Jasper and Martijn went extremely smoothly; only an adjustment around the chimney was necessary. The brickwork is spared in such a way that it aligns with the Holonite parts that serve as window frames. It may seem very simple, but it required some thought. However, the result speaks for itself: the effect is amazing!’
