Holonite, manufacturer and supplier of façade and finishing materials, the Cradle to Cradle Silver was awarded the certification by EPEA Netherlands.  A new milestone for the manufacturer who has made great strides in the field of sustainability since 2010. Having achieved the Cradle to Cradle Basic (2013) and Bronze (2014) certification, Holonite has amply fulfilled the requirements associated with the Silver certification.   The certificate is a huge asset to the producer who has even been able to achieve the level of ” Gold ” on the material aspects re-usability and energy management.

From research to a 100% recyclable product

With pride the company can look back on the past few years in which sustainability has always played a greater role.  In 2010 Holonite launched a comprehensive study on Holonite at product and process level within the framework of the Cradle to Cradle certification.  The research is an ongoing process that covers the entire production chain.  In practice this means that the entire production process, in close cooperation with selected suppliers, is reviewed again and again.  This research is time-consuming and costly, but it has already led to a considerable number of improvements in the early stages right across the board. Examples at product level are bio-based products consisting of 90% natural raw materials and lightweight products made of an entirely new blend.  Moreover, sophisticated engineering has produced lighter products, which, thanks to a reduction in material, are easy to fit.  The ultimate goal of this process at Holonite is to have a 100% recyclable product.

Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute

Silver Certificate is awarded by the US-based Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute (C2CPII) and granted to Holonite by EPEA Netherlands.  C2CPII is a non-profit organisation that acts as an independent assessor for Cradle to Cradle product certification.  The Institute collaborates with leading figures from academia, government and industry to implement its standard for assessing and continuously improving products based on five categories: material purity and re-usability, energy and water management and social well-being .  These core values are tightened with each certification and recertification.   The Product scorecard of Holonite on http://www.c2ccertified.org/products/scorecard/holonite,the website of C2CPII, proves that Holonite has achieved the Silver Certification with a commendation Regarding the subjects of material reusability and energy management, the company is even rated at ‘ Gold ‘ level’.

The Cradle to Cradle principle

Cradle to Cradle is an innovative, positive and integrated approach to sustainability, which is not based on reduction, but on the unlimited reuse of raw materials,  “waste is food”.  Within the Cradle to Cradle philosophy, there are five main criteria: raw materials, recycling potential, energy use, water management and working conditions.  There are five levels of certification: basic, bronze, silver, gold and platinum.
